Untying knots in proteins.
A shoelace can be readily untied by pulling its ends rather than its loops. Attempting to untie a native knot in a protein can also succeed or fail depending on where one pulls. However, thermal fluctuations induced by the surrounding water affect conformations stochastically and may add to the uncertainty of the outcome. When the protein is pulled by the termini, the knot can only get tightene...
متن کاملColoured Untying of Knots
For p 3 and for p 5 we show that every p-coloured knot K can be reduced to a left-hand pp, 2q-torus knot by a sequence of surgeries along components in the kernel of its p-colouring ρ : π1pS3 Kq ÝÑ D2p . This gives us a 3-colour and a 5-colour analogue of the surgery presentation of a knot in the complement of an unknot. AMS Classification 57M25; 57M10,57M27
متن کاملSurgery untying of coloured knots
A p–colouring of a knot K is a surjective homomorphism ρ from its knot group G := π1(S − K) to D2p := {t, s|t2 = sp = 1, tst = sp−1} the dihedral group of order 2p, when p is any odd integer. The pair (K, ρ) is called a p–coloured knot. It is a well-known fact that we can encode ρ as a colouring of arcs of a knot diagram by elements of Zp (the cyclic group of order p), subject to the ‘colouring...
متن کاملThe Effect of Working Memory Rehabilitation on Visual Memory and Memory Span
Introduction: Age-related cognitive decline or cognitive aging is largely the result of structural and functional decline in specific areas of the brain, but lifestyle also contributes to this cognitive decline. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of working memory rehabilitation on visual memory and memory span in ageing. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with pret...
متن کاملO14: Autobiographical Memory, Trauma, and the Development of Memory Interventions
Autobiographical memory, that is, our memory for personal life experiences, is integral to our sense of self. However, the experience of trauma can create distortions in how our memories are bought to mind. In particular, trauma can produce an overgeneral memory style, which relates to the development of both PTSD and depression. However, theory states that immediately following a traumatic eve...
